Methane capture and combined energy production at WWTP

The waste water treatment plant near Kubratovo is energy independent. After the implementation of the project “Methane capture and combined energy production at WWTP” it was successfully registered under Gold Standard programme and generates revenue from trading of greenhouse gases, stated Stanislav Stanev, Operations and Maintenance Director at Sofiyska Voda, part of Veolia Group. Ten municipalities were awarded in the competition “Eco Municipality”

The competition will be held again in 2017 probably with small changes in the regulations. Ten municipalities were awarded for their successful projects in the field of sustainable management of resources and environmental protection during the annual meeting of the national association of the municipalities in Albena. The competition is organized by the French Embassy in Bulgaria and 31 municipalities took part in it. The municipalities submitted 48 applications in four categories: Sustainable Water Management; Sustainable Waste Management; Energy Efficiency of Buildings and Sustainable Mobility. The winners in the category Sustainable Water Management will make a study tour in a country in Eastern Europe provided by Veolia Bulgaria. The municipalities which rank first in the category Sustainable Waste Management will be awarded a waste management audit, executed by the municipality, provided again by Veolia Bulgaria.
