Biodiversity seminars

Biodiversity conservation is one of the main commitments that we at Veolia have made to society. Within this year’s celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity, we organized 3 workshops dedicated to biodiversity conservation. Our guest lecturer was Assist. Prof. Atanas Grozdanov, PhD, from the Faculty of Biology, Sofia University. He conducted two of those seminars on the territory of Sofiyska Voda’s sites Bistritsa PWTP and Kubratovo WWTP, and the third one was an inline seminar. Throughout the years, Assist. Prof. Atanas Grozdanov has worked actively with us on the implementation of the project for detailed survey of the rich flora and fauna on the territories of all potable and wastewater treatment plants in Sofia.

In front of a diverse range of colleagues, he revealed the variety of plant and animal species occurring on the territories of our sites and talked about the threats and the necessary actions that we must take together to protect the species.

It was extremely interesting for everyone to learn that artificial habitats of various nature had been created and that plays an important role in preserving and attracting new species to the territory of the sites, which, in turn, could contribute to the richness of the local biodiversity.

This is one of the numerous initiatives relating to that subject, which we are implementing in Bulgaria, in fulfilment of our commitments to society in terms of preservation of the natural diversity of the environment we work in.

Among Veolia’s numerous biodiversity initiatives, we also mark the meeting – discussion on “Industrial spaces for the benefit of urban biodiversity”. Veolia Energy Varna, the Municipal Center for Environment and Sustainable Development – Ecovarna, and experts from Veolia Solutions Bulgaria participated in it. This is how we are contributing to the fulfilment of our commitments to society on protecting natural biodiversity of the environment in which we work. The journalist Svilena Velcheva from ecovarna.info also talks about that.
