A team of three students from the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy (UACEG), have been awarded a one-year scholarship from Sofiyska Voda operated by Veolia.

Daniela Garilova, Gergana Ivanova and Yordan Nikolov have won the competition with their project Monitoring of the impact of large pieces of sediments which come into sewers on theoretical flow distribution in the area of combined storm overflow. This year’s scholarship has been given to students in their 4th year of study at UACEG, specialty WSS. Apart from the price money, this year they will have the opportunity to implement their own project with the help of a mentor from Sofiyska Voda.

‘The cooperation with UACEG is crucial for us because the students from the University will build careers in the country, Europe and worldwide. This year’s Scholarship is given to a team of students with a joint project, which shows that teamwork leads to good results in research and development,’ said Arnaud Valleteau, Executive Director of Sofiyska Voda and Deputy Executive Director of Veolia Bulgaria.

Mr. Valleteau said that the sewerage network, which the project concerns, is key not only to the company’s work but also to the life in the capital city. He added that Veolia’s fields of work – WSS, energy and waste management, were mutually related and gave as example the Wastewater Treatment Plant near Kubratovo, where more energy is generated upon treatment than the one required for the functioning of the Plant.

The Scholarship has been granted for the second consecutive year. It is targeted at future WSS engineers who study at the Hydrotechnical Faculty of UACEG. The scholarship is aimed at serving as encouragement and incentive for students to start their career development by practically implementing their good ideas under the mentorship of accomplished specialists in the field.

Any student or team of students is entitled to apply. Each candidate or team of candidates should present an idea for development and implementation of a specific project in the field of potable water and wastewater treatment, water supply and sewerage, hydraulic modelling or another aspect of the activity of Sofiyska Voda JSC which would improve the efficiency of the company’s work in the respective sphere.
