Protecting the biodiversity at the sites of Veolia in Bulgaria

The team of Veolia Bulgaria prevents the damage to local biodiversity at its sites in three ways:

Preventive maintenance of a bioreactor for organic waste processing of food waste

• Client: Sofia city Municipality, 1.5 Million citizens
• Contract Duration: 2 months

• 3 600 m³ bioreactor volume

Sofiyska Voda, operated by Veolia, carried out preventive maintenance of the production line to improve the efficiency and prolong the service life of the facility. The produced compost is used as a quality fertilizer in agriculture and the bio-methane recovered in the process is utilized as a source of electricity in the organic waste treatment facility.

The company is able to monetize emissions reductions generated from its activity without being part of EU ETS scheme. Sofiyska voda is recognized internationally as an active player in the fight against climate change and Sofia Municipality can use this achievement as a reference for good practice.

Sofia WWTP treats wastewater from domestic and industrial users as well as rainwater from the combined sewerage network of Sofia

Thanks to the continuous work of Sofia WWTP, each year over 126 million m³ of treated wastewater is discharged into the Iskar river and more than 75,000 tons of carbon emissions are saved.

“Heat supply by heat carrier – hot water for the needs of the Municipality of Varna per LOT’s”

• Customer: The Municipality of Varna
• Type of service: Servicing of heating installations, fuel-feeding installations, electrical installations in boiler rooms and internal heating installations in the building of the Municipality of Varna and in other municipal structures

Veolia Energy Varna EAD is the only company on the territory of the city of Varna with an issued by the EWRC license for heat transmission as well as a license for the production of electrical and heat energy.

• Service includes: Sampling, transport and analysis of potable water samples on the sites: analyses of ions, chemical elements (metals and non-metals), pesticides, hydrocarbons and haloalkanes

The analyses are made in conformity with accredited methods based on recognized international standards or intra-laboratory methods

• Clients: 4+ WSS companies and 10 + industrial customers, across country
• Service includes: sample taking, ensured special transportation conditions, analysis of organic and inorganic pollutants, biological and organoleptic tests, data and document processing, complete traceability of the samples at any point of time

The Laboratory Testing Complex (LTC) to Sofiyska Voda AD, operated by Veolia, is a high-tech laboratory with a team of experienced and highly-qualified professionals that offers a wide range of environmental analyses. The LTC has been accredited under the BDS EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard since 2011 and possesses a certificate issued by EA "Bulgarian Accreditation Service".
